The gearbox is one of the most important parts of any machinery. Gearboxes transfer POWER from a primary mover like an internal combustion (e.g. engine or electric motor) to a rotating driven load (e.g. mill, conveyor, fan, agitator, or machine) i.e. the efficient movement of ENERGY from a primary generator to a location where useful WORK is to be done.
In a perfect world, multiple components could be produced in a single piece, or coupled and installed in perfect alignment. However, in the real world, separate components must be brought together and connected onsite. Couplings are required to transmit rotational forces (torque) between two lengths of shaft and despite the most rigorous attempts, alignment is almost never perfect.
When making an important decision such as selecting the correct mechanical transmission system, we need to consider the long-term impact that this purchase will have on the company for years to come as these systems generally have relatively long lifespans.
